MV Marco Polo

Your Rating:Five Stars

Date of Trip: September 3, 2000
Itinerary: Mediterranean

Overview
The vessel, Marco Polo, was a lovely ship with a smaller size group (700-800) than one of the huge newer ships. The food was better than average cruise fare, well presented and efficiently served. Best of all, there were no children aboard that we saw. The passengers were a mix of well-to do younger and well-traveled mature folk who were able to provide interesting companionship at meals and ashore in our groups. Shore itineraries were well executed and of very good quality. Public areas of the ship were tailored to relaxation and enjoying the view and the air.

Public Areas
Interiors were very tastefully appointed. There were a lot of smaller conversation areas tucked into spaces, so one could sit, enjoy a view and talk.

Food and Service
There was a good choice of restaurants, buffet and seated. I found the food good in both settings.

Cabins
The cabin was nicely furnished with a lot of storage space. There is the advantage of a televised lecture series on each port prior to docking that can be viewed in the cabin. The bath was generous for a standard cabin.

Entertainment
Did not attend

Activities
Ports in the Aegean: Delos: Five Stars Rhodes: Two available tours, we took the fortress and it was wonderful, but friends took the Knights and said it was also great. Crete: Knossos, a little too short, and very crowded, but very interesting. Santorinni: Superb, you are given a half day to stroll the quaint streets, which is perfect. Don't waste time on the donkeys....too smelly and too slow, instead, take the "egg" and walk some to enjoy the view and the people. Mykonos: Extraordinary, you are on your own here as well, and days would not be enough to see everything there is to see. This is a divine, upscale, immaculate island. Take a couple of hours to sit at the sea wall (I think all the restaurants you see there are equally good) and eat some fish, crab, squid, oysters and scallops (not even too pricey, compared to Athens).....Petros, the cheeky, demanding local tame Pelican will come to visit in the late afternoon and that is worth seeing....

Who Goes
As I mentioned before, we very much enjoyed the passengers....they reminded me of an A&K group we were on the Nile with....a mix of young and retired professionals in search of an enjoyable and scholarly vacation.
