Star Cruises

MS Star Aquarius

Your Rating:Two Stars
Reviewed by:Peter White
# previous cruises: 6
Date of Trip: August 14, 1998
Itinerary: Orient

Overview
Better than your might expect. Obviously budget but same itinerary as superstar and mega star ships. Delightfully refreshing lack of Europeans & Americans! Only some 15 out of 2000. Officers all European, 1st language on board English. Size of ship (Compare to Superstar & mega star) meant 7 choices of restaurant. Certainly recommend to 1st time & budget cruisers and those with cosmopolitan tastes.

Public Areas
Night club good. Pool and 2 Jacuzzis small but adequate. Too many karaoke bars (suited the majority of travellers). Plenty of deck space to sit, sunbathe, jog. No feeling of overcrowding despite numbers on board.

Food and Service
Only 2 or 3 of 7 restaurants food included in price. Food interesting but servery in buffet could have kept food hotter. Staff very helpful. Buffet on deck each evening but didn't use it: travelling with son who had conservative food tastes!

Cabins
Cabin quiet, airconditioning fine, bathroom small but adequate, bunks comfortable, but cupboard space was limited and overall cabin space very limited: but what do you expect at these so-very-low prices??!!

Entertainment
Karaoke not my scene. Night club quite ambitious but performers who were not English-as-1st-language had obviously learnt their words phonetically! Amusing to have a South-American-Indian band who were all from the Philippines! Didn't notice any piped music: wonderful!

Activities
Not much time spent on board. Excursions to Kuala Lumpur and on Island of Langkawi: both interesting, well-guided and allowing enough but not excessive time for shopping. All transport air-conditioned.

Who Goes
Only about 15 European, Australasian and no other English: how refreshing. Most chinese and Japanese spoke some English. Really cosmopolitan. If you want to cruise with other westerners go to Miami and don't bother to see the world!
