Itinerary: Bahamas

Overview
We took two small children with us, ages 4 and 5. Our major concern was a lack of activities for the children this young. We were very pleased to find all kinds of activities for them, lasting almost all day long - up to midnight!

The ship had private baby sitters that we used for three nights, using the same person for all three nights. She was wonderful and the children really liked her; so much so that by the third night, my 5 year old daughter playfuly pushed me away, telling me to go out of the stateroom so she could play with the baby sitter.

Public Areas
The public areas were a pleasure to walk around, especially the Centrum area. Good shops and quality merchandise. The casino was adequate in size but I wished the ship banned smoking there. It detracted from the fun.

Food and Service
The food ranged from "okay" to "excellent," depending on the day and the meal. Each day was a "theme" meal, i.e., french, Italian, etc., and the wait staff wore uniforms designed with the theme in mind; tastefully understated, thank goodness. Service overcame any quibbles about the food. It was just right and highly professional. The staff could not do enough to please you and they treated the kids with charm and playful respect. They deserved a good tip at the end of the trip.

We did not partake of the buffets, but the Windjammer dining room was also excellent for more casual dining. We used it for breakfast and late diners.

Cabins
The cabins were small but, then again, you don't come on a cruise to stay in your room, do you? We had four bunks; two of them folded down (one over one other stationary bunk) to accommodate the four of us. They were comfortable but strictly utilitarian. The cabin crews were very accommodating, making up the beds and folding them up during morning hours and turning them down for the evening.

The shower stall was a good size and should not pose any problems to anyone. Water pressure was not at fire-hose level, but was pleasant enough. The shower curtain was somewhat flimsy and water splashed into the head area, but fortunately, the head area also had a floor drain.

The toilets were of an intersecting design. It had to be closed when flushed and the flushing mechanism was similar to those on airplanes.

Entertainment
The shows were relatively good, even if the singers had so-so voices. The sets and choreography, however, was first rate - of Broadway calibre! Overall, very entertaining.

Activities
My only complaint was the pool. There were two pools, both sea water, not fresh. We got plenty of sea water swimming on shore leave and on Coco Cay, so a fresh water pool would have been a nice change. However, I did like the shallow "kiddie" pools attached to both deeper pools. You could swim and keep an eye on the kids without having to be in the kiddie pool with them.

Who Goes
I have heard that other cruise lines do not accommodate young children like ours as much as RCI did, and I can believe the reports. If you have children of any age, definitely consider any ship on Royal Caribbean International.
