Norwegian Cruise Line

SS Norway

Your Rating:Two Stars
Reviewed by: Emilie Carter
# previous cruises: 10+
Date of Trip: September 2, 2000
Itinerary: Transatlantic

Overview
After hearing about the elegance etc of the Norway, our cruise was very disappointing. We took the farewell trans- atlantic trip 9/2/01, the ports of call were excellent, but overall quality and service were poor. If this is an example of NCL, then we will not book another.

Public Areas
The promenades were impressive and the public areas on the International Deck were very attractive. The overall condition of the Norway was in need of a face-lift. Carpeting on the Sun and Sky decks are torn and worn out, paint is scuffed and peeled, and in general old. There is a very small pool. Part of the casino equip had been emptied.

Food and Service
The food which is usually the high-light of cruises was a major let down in quality and presentation. Vegetables were like they were left in the pot too long, the meat was not tender, and the choices limited. Service was second-rate and extremely slow. 90% of the time we were late for shows and had to leave meals unfinished to make it to our tours. The outdoor buffet was the worst:confused and no place to sit. People wandering with their trays to the Intern.Club, Sports bars, or promenade. (Night snacks in Sports Bar good.

Cabins
The width of our room was: a queen sized bed pushed into the corner with 1' space and then a small closet. The length of our room was the queen sized bed pushed into the corner, a small dresser, and a small closet. No dresser top use, due to TV. Two steps past the door and you run into the bed!!They shouldn't even book this room(A134). Oh, we had on piece of furniture-a stool and there was barely room for it.

Entertainment
The big musical production numbers were excellent. The singers were so talented, better than the single acts. The musical duos and trios in the Int.Club and Sports Bar very enjoyable. The Norway Big Band very good. The cruise staff Friendly and Fun.

Activities
Activities offered were great, but not enough for a 16-day cruise and so many at-sea days. Daily mass was a big plus. Ports: NY, Halifax, Newfoundland, Scotland, Ireland, France and England. The itinerary made this trip, otherwise as a cruise it was extremely disappointing. There was a lack of energy and fun from the dining staff, as if they were just doing a job. The Norway may be legendary, but it's passed its prime and should retire.

Who Goes
A very wide range of people, many devotees to the Norway and hundreds of French and English saying good-bye and taking the last voyage. Yes, we met many great people we would have liked to know better. Passengers on cruises are generally friendly and fun to be with, that's what cruising is about. My review is mostly negative I'm sorry to say, but we had such high expectations (and also money spent) that it hurts. We are spoiled from other cruise lines from which we have many experiences to compare.
