Itinerary: Mediterranean

Overview
If you are in the East Mediterranean you could do a lot worse than take a short cruise on this ship. For the money, it's an absolute winner! CALYPSO has lots of comfortable public areas and it is clean throughout; fittings are relatively new; food is plentiful and tasty, service courteous, entertainment fine.

Public Areas
The pool is small, rather a deco feature. The casino is adequately equipped; dealers are pros. Quite a nice library - but no books on the shelves! They should call it 'Reading area'. The Duty Free shops have all you would really need, just don't plan to buy your new Mont Blanc here... Spacious sun deck with two games courts. No walk-around promenade but lots of deck space. Small but practical Gym. Deeply padded sofas and chairs in all covered public areas. Very fast elevator!

Food and Service
CALYPSO has two Restaurants, the smaller one offering a buffet. Food is plentiful and tasty. Service is courteous. There are 3 bars, I especially liked the stern one (boat deck).

Cabins
The cabin was clean and the furniture/fittings in very good condition. Everything was working perfectly. TV set a nice touch, but only one in house channel. I found the closet space adequate for a 3-day cruise. The shower will accommodate anyone under 1.9 m. No noise to speak of; in fact, this overall is one of the quietest boats I've been on.

Entertainment
In the main salon there were separate shows on each evening (though the entertainers were the same). Quite nice, if a little short. Content was stand-up comedy, singers, dancers and a magician duo. There is another club with a singing duo and a separate Disco. Overall, this cruise offers good entertainment.

Activities
During the day Bingo sessions are held. Massage/sauna is available. The 'library' has cards tables... The magician stages shows specially for children. We docked at Beirouth and Port Said. In both ports daily excursions are available. I didn't take these, preferring to stroll ashore on my own. People who attended the excursions commented highly on them.

Who Goes
Most passengers were European tourists to Cyprus who thought they would combine a quick dash to the neighboring countries. The rest were Cypriot families enjoying an extended weekend. Middle class all, but then so am I :o)
