Holland America Line

MS Amsterdam

Your Rating:Five Stars
Reviewed by:Don and Bobby
# previous cruises: 10 to 20
Date of Trip: March 31, 2004
Itinerary: South America

Overview
This was one of the best cruises we have been on, as had enough days at sea, to break up port stops. The ship is beautiful, Service excellent, typical of Holland and one of the best values of any cruise we have taken. This trip was one of the few ships that made it around Cape Horn, most cut through the Straits of Magellan.

Public Areas
The ship is not too big, easy to get around and beautifully decorated. We did not find any flaws in the public area and ship had a walk around promenade. Did not use pool, but casino adequate and staff friendly.

Food and Service
Food good, not exceptional, service excellent, as the Indonesians are friendly and helpful, ready always to satisfy your needs. Buffet good, enough varieties to satisfy our needs. However we prefer to eat in the dinning room. Satisfied with all the dinning rooms.

Cabins
We had Category C. tried for balcony but sold out. Room large, enough closet space, shower adequate, room service excellent. Category C is on the walking deck, which gives ease of access to the outside for viewing.

Entertainment
Went to all of the shows, which were excellent, enough variety to satisfy most of the passengers. Cruise staff was good always ready to help.

Activities
South America may not be for everyone, as it can get cold, the farther south you go. Stopped at The Falkland Islands, Buenos Aires, several small ports near the cape. If you like Penguins, saw thousands, of several varieties. Both Santiago and Buenos Aires and interesting, prices good. Guest Lectures informative, providing history of Chile, Argentina, Falklands and Antarctica.. Child service available, but few children on this trip. Pool and health Club on board.

Who Goes
Passengers overall were older, most experienced travellers and were a wealth of information, a delight to converse with. Our dinning table for eight were fun, in fact we rented a car together at the end of the voyage, to have a last dinner together in Santiago. Kept in touch after the voyage.
