Itinerary: River Cruise

Overview
From Chicago through the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway to Quebec City. A truly memorable trip that I had always wanted to do. The ship is friendly and has a fine staff. The lakes ports are suprisingly interesting, particularly if you want to learn about the ships on the lakes. In Quebec we landed in the middle of their Festival of the founding of New France great experience, if you can schedule to that. It was a pleasant surprise to us and we stayed there three extra days.

Public Areas
One nice lounge (plenty big enough for number on ship) Promenade is very narrow. no pool or casino

Food and Service
Food service was spectacular. The serving staff is American (as are all the crew). The food was was very good except for the fruit pies which I thought to be of low quality. The breakfast and lunch buffets were OK, I preferred the selections in the dining room.

Cabins
Cabins are ADEQUATE but don't bring a lot of clothing. The closet space and drawer apace is limited, but we did have enough to store our things without trouble. The shower is certainly large enough for any normal adult. Storage in the bathroom is tight

Entertainment
The shows on board are movies and lectures by a naturalist and a historian. Both good. One harpist came aboard in one port and was quite good. Two small musical groups who came aboard in port were so-so in my opinion

Activities
When under way when out of sight of land one suns or reads. When land is in sight the sightseeing is paramount. In ports shore excursions are available but I took none. The out-of-towners (95%) toured Chicago and all were very favorably impressed. In Manitowoc the maritime museum, in Sturgeon Bay cherry pie. In St. Ignace Mackinac Island and the Grand Hotel, in Windsor the museum and some went to Greenfield Village etc. in Detroit. Some took a side excursion to Niagara Falls from Welland; in Montreal museums and in Quebec City the city and surrounding sights.

Who Goes
The passengers were almost all over 60 and pretty well-heeled. This is a relatively costly trip. Two university groups (Texas and Washington State) and National Wildlife plus us unaffiliated. All very cordial. Youngsters would be bored stiff. Invite to dinner - yes
