Itinerary: Bahamas

Overview
This was a 5 night cruise to the Bahamas leaving from Charleston. A very pleasant trip. Embarkation was difficult due to the tighter security, but this was a port authority problem, not the line. Charleston was not equipped to handle this many passengers with this tight of security.

Public Areas
Public rooms are extremely nice and plentiful. Live music was played in several lounges, the promenade, and the atrium throughout the day. The ship had just returned from drydock, and was in excellent condition. I sailed on her when she was only two months old, and she was in as good condition this cruise as she was then. Especially nice is the Ionian Room. While the lobby is garish, the remainder of the ship is very tasteful, and a few rooms come close to being elegant.

Food and Service
Dining room food was excellent. Only one item (veal) was average, and my waiter happily brought me another selection. Buffet food was of good quality, but I didn't care for some of the selections. The deli, bbq restaurant and pizzaria were excellent. We ordered room service several nights before bed, and it always arrived within 10 minutes. We were told that as a result of Carnival's new 4 seatings for dinner, all entrees are prepared when ordered. This was evident, as we sat at a table for 9, and all meals/courses arrived together, at the appropriate time, and had obviously just been prepared.

Cabins
We were in cabin 7258, a category 11 suite with a large balcony, marble entrance, leather couch, bar with refrigerator, tv, vcr, two beds, marble bath, whirlpool tub and walk-in closet. The room was very quiet and comfortable. Room steward introduced himself when we arrived, and cleaned the room twice daily. Very good service.

Entertainment
Although the cruise director was annoying, the entertainers and shows were excellent. We saw two comedians, and one of the two shows. There was a jazz band that played in one lounge, a classical trio in the lobby and for afternoon tea in the Ionian Room, a reggae band on deck, a dance ensemble in the Adriatic lounge, a piano player in the Irish Sea Bar, and another piano player along the promenade. All were excellent. However, the best by far the full orchestra in the show lounge. They were truly outstanding.

Activities
Standard cruise ship activities during the day. There was very little to do or see in Freeport. Nassau was enjoyable, but it was my third visit, so I had seen most everything before. There were several children on board, but they were so busy with Camp Carnival we never saw them.

Who Goes
Since this cruise left from Charleston, most of the passengers were from North and South Carolina. We met a few people from Mass., and a couple from Indiana. However, the cruises from Charleston are mainly for people within a few hours. Six of the nine people at our dinner table were from Charleston. I enjoyed their company.
