Carnival Cruise Line

MS Jubilee

Your Rating:Four Stars
Reviewed by:James Drummond

Date of Trip: January 8, 2001
Itinerary: Caribbean - Western

Overview
We actually sailed January 8, 2001, that option not available as we write this in February. A four star rating from someone who swore they would not sail on Carnival is high praise indeed. The ship spotless, room larger than average and the food very good. A few miscues along the way but on a value for dollar basis one of the best cruises ever.

Public Areas
We prefer the smaller more traditional ships so we loved Jubilee. More tastefuly decorated than Carnival's newer ships in my opinion. Poolside did get a bit crowded at times and the volume level of the music could be deafening but overall we were quite pleased.

Food and Service
The dining room was tasteful decorated and the food overall very good. Much better than we experienced on NCL during our 1999 Alaska cruise. Service was adequate and our one attempt to request assistance from the headwaiter was met with a rude "no". (Of course then he expected a tip the last night which he did not receive.)The buffets on deck were quite good and changed daily. The 24 hour pizza and salad bar a great addition.

Cabins
The largest cabin I have ever had on a cruise ship. Quite spacious and well laid out. Noise was a problem both from next door and above.

Entertainment
The shows were quite good, about what we expected from Carnival and superior to what we experienced on NCL.

Activities
We missed Grand Cayman through no fault of Carnivals. Ground swells and choppy seas made the use of tenders too dangerous. We did enjoy Cozumel but having been there previously confined ourselves to a day on the beach and a brief glass bottom boat ride.

Plenty of on board activities to keep one interested. We primarily took this trip to relax and read. The library is only open a couple of hours a day, very odd. The few places on the deck where one could escape the poolside scene were great at times but at others passengers brought boom boxes and played them loud enough to be distracting. Carnival might consider banning them altogether.

Who Goes
We were surprised at the variety of ages of the passengers on this trip. Carnival still attracts its share of the "drink til you drop" crowd but overall the ship contained an interesting mix of middle age couples, seniors and families with children. We were fortunate to be seated with a couple about our age from Canada and found them quite enjoyable.
